PKM Faculty of Agriculture UMA is assisting urban farmers according to the trend of urban farming which has increased in recent years. Agriculture utilizing yards in cities, including homes and offices, is one solution to strengthening family food security.
Medan Perjuangan Subdistrict, Medang Perjuangan District is one of the urban villages that has had urban agriculture by cultivating its own viticulture since 2010 with assistance from the Medan city government in the field of Food Security.
This was conveyed by the Head of PKM Ir Rizal Aziz, MP accompanied by PKM members Ir Asmah Indrawati, MP, Ir A Rahman, MS, and Korlap M. Usman, SS to reporters at UMA I Campus Jl Kolam No 1 Medan Estate.
Assistance starts from June to September 2020. He explained that the results of the survey were conducted by the team, farmer groups had problems in Medang Perjuangan sub-district, generally the use of planting media from city trench sediments. The ditch sediment is a communal waste, it is feared that it will pollute plants and make health consumption worse.
In addition, it also triggers flooding when it rains. The people themselves do not understand how to process compost as a horticultural garden medium. Through this PKM, UMA lecturers provide training to Medan Perjuangan residents to be able to process trench sediment into compost.
On that occasion, the Head of the PKM UMA Team, Ir. Rizal Aziz, handed over a number of tools and materials to support urban agricultural activities in Medan District.
The purpose of this activity is to mentoring urban farming communities so that the formation of urban agriculture. Mr. Rizal Aziz said that to support the sustainability of PKM activities, his party and the team handed over several packages of agricultural tools and seeds as well as various agricultural fields. The UMA PKM TEAM also appreciates the support from the Ministry of Research and Technology which has provided funding for PPM activities and the UMA Foundation.
