Friday, March 5, 2021, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Medan Area was again covered by a television station, Metro TV, in the activity of making animal feed from corn husks waste. The activity was held at the UMA Compost House which involved biology study program students and student representatives from several high schools (SMA) in the city of Medan.
The processing or making of animal feed from corn husks is directly guided by Mr. Abdul Karim, S.Si, M.Si as a biology study program lecturer and as the coordinator of the UMA Compost House and accompanied by representatives of high school teachers. The purpose of this event is to provide education and knowledge to high school students and breeders among people affected by Covid-19 and to reduce and utilize corn husk waste.
The process of making this feed was brought out by Biology study program student, Dedy Irawan. Dedy explained step by step the process of making feed and introduced the ingredients used to make animal feed. The materials used are as follows:
1. Cornhusk waste
2. Bran
3. Expired milk
4. Molasses
5. Bacteria
6. Water
7. Salt
This method of making/manufacturing or processing corn husk animal feed is very easy to make. First, the corn husks are crushed in a grinding machine (it can be mashed if you do not have a grinding machine). Then the finely ground corn husks are mixed with other ingredients and then fermented for 4 days.
The feed from the corn husks is very economical, where the price is only Rp. 3,000.00 Rupiah per Kilo. Compared with the price of feed circulating in the market which reaches Rp. 10,000.00 Rupiah per kilo, of course, this feed from corn husks is the right choice for breeders who have been affected by Covid-19.
